Concrete Flatwork Process — Cornerstone Concrete Plus
Before We Begin
00
Client Consultation
Before a single shovel hits the ground, we sit down with you to understand the full scope of your project — your goals, your site conditions, your timeline, and any specific concerns. This conversation shapes every decision that follows and ensures there are no surprises once work begins.
Phase 1  —  Preparation & Pour
01
Excavation
We dig down to solid, stable ground — removing soft or organic material that would cause settling over time.
02
Gravel Base
Gravel or crushed stone is brought in to raise the base to the correct elevation and slope for proper drainage.
03
Compaction
The base is mechanically compacted to create a dense, stable foundation that won't sink or erode beneath the slab.
04
Form Setting
Concrete forms are set to define the exact shape, edge lines, and finished elevation of the slab.
05
Rebar Placement
Steel rebar is cut, placed, and tied in a grid pattern to reinforce the slab and prevent differential settlement and separation over time.
06
Concrete Pour
Concrete is poured into the forms. Timing and consistency are critical — this is where experience makes a real difference.
07
Screeding
A screed board is pulled across the tops of the forms to level the concrete and establish a flat, even surface plane.
08
Bull Floating
The surface is floated to smooth out ridges and voids, and to slightly embed aggregate below the surface.
09
Edging
We run an edger along the forms to create clean, rounded edges — stronger, safer, and more visually appealing than raw edges.
10
Final Float
A second pass with the float brings the cream to the surface, preparing it for the final finish application.
11
Finish Application
A broom, trowel, or decorative finish is applied for the desired texture — providing the look, grip, and character of the final surface.
Concrete Cures — This Step Doesn't Get Rushed

Once finished, the slab is left to cure under the right temperature and moisture conditions. Adequate cure time is non-negotiable — it's what determines long-term strength and surface integrity.

Phase 2  —  After Hardening
12
Form Stripping
Once hardened, forms are carefully removed to reveal clean, finished edges and the full shape of the completed slab.
13
Sealing
A quality sealer is applied to protect against moisture, staining, and the freeze-thaw cycles that are hard on Indiana concrete.
14
Relief Joint Cutting
Control joints are saw-cut into the slab to give concrete a place to relieve stress — reducing the likelihood of random cracking.
15
Site Cleanup
Excess material is removed, forms and equipment are cleared out, and the site is left clean — ready for the next phase of your project or everyday use once the concrete has fully cured.
